Kwame Dawes, George W. Holmes Emeritus Professor of English, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS).
Founded in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock, and 60 other scholars, the academy honors excellence and convenes leaders from every field of human endeavor to examine new ideas, address issues of importance to the nation and the world, and work together “to cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honor, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.”
Dawes is the author of numerous books, and his awards include the Forward Prize for Poetry (1994), Pushcart Prize (2001), Musgrave Medal (2004), Guggenheim Fellowship (2012) and Campbell Prize for Poetry (2019).
