The Department of English offers undergraduate majors and minors in English and Film Studies and graduate study in English. Undergraduate concentrations and graduate specializations highlight the flexibility of our degree programs. All of our degrees are part of a broad liberal arts education offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.
Our faculty are published professionals and have been recognized for their teaching, research, and service. What we do can be generally divided into six research and teaching areas:
We seek to help undergraduate English majors develop their critical reading, writing, and thinking skills. Courses are regularly offered across genres, time periods, locations, and topics, and regularly incorporate digital humanities and film. Graduate students dive deeper by selecting among our specializations and certifications. Our film studies program aims to present the world of cinema in all its forms, across time and location, from a variety of approaches. Students can see film as an art form that offers a window into our national and global histories, that shapes our cultural present, and that can help us to imagine possible futures.
Undergraduate students have numerous ways to get involved in experiential learning. Joining UNL Film Club, connecting with faculty through Undergraduate Creative Activity and Research Experience (UCARE), and internships with publications such as Prairie Schooner are just a few.
Alumni from our department have gone on to a variety of career paths—you can explore their stories.
We look forward to seeing students' paths unfold as curiosity moves them at Nebraska.
