Thanks to students in ENGL 355, Susan Glaspell's 1915 novel Fidelity, out of print in the U.S., will be released as an annotated version on Oct. 24 and celebrated by the Department of English on Oct. 27.
The main project for Kevin McMullen's "Editing and the Publishing Industry" course was to have students serve as scholarly editors for an out-of-print and out-of-copyright literary work, researching and writing a critical introduction and contextual annotations. Glaspell was a playwright who earned the 1931 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a published author of nine novels.
Southern Illinois University Press' Saluki Publishing will publish the book, listing the all of the students as co-editors.
The release party will be held 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Bailey Library, Andrews Hall. Students will read excerpts and answer questions about the experience. A QR code for discounted copies of the book will be provided, as well as pizza, snacks, and soda.
McMullen is a research associate professor in the department and a faculty fellow in the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities.
