Robin Emmons

Majors: English & Classical Studies
Minors: History
Hometown: Elkhorn, NE
Year: Senior

Why did you select your major(s) and minor(s)? Were there any events or people that convinced you to declare?
I was undeclared soon after Covid hit, and I was searching for things to do. I’d always liked classical history and writing, and at the time, you couldn’t have a major in English alone, you had to have two. So I chose English because it fit my career aspirations, and Classics because it fit my personal interests.

What is your favorite course you have taken from your program(s) and why?
It’s a tough call, but probably Greek Prose 4. We read the Iliad in the original Homeric Greek, and it was amazing. There is so much more depth to the story than can be translated into English, and it was a great treat to read.

Who have been some of your strongest mentors or role models here?
Dr. Lipmann, Dr. Stevenson, Dr. Palmer, Dr. Chadhauri

Do you have research experience (UCARE or other)? If so, please describe your project.
I wrote a Thesis for Distinction, which I received. It was a difficult task, but the research was intriguing, and I was proud of the work that I did.

Have you had an internship or job? If so, please describe it and explain how your major(s) helped you with it.
I have an internship with the Prairie Schooner currently. As an English major looking to go into the field of publishing and editing, an internship with the university’s premier literary journal is an amazing opportunity. I’m learning a lot about the industry I’m going into.

What are you involved in on campus or in the community?
For a time, I was involved with Classics Club and the Homerathon, as well as the yearly battle re-enactment.

What are your plans after graduation?
My primary focus is to get a job and move to somewhere my Fiance and I can settle down for a few years, but once we have settled into our careers and started to build up a savings account, I would like to get an MFA.
