Therapy of the Writing Desk: Inkblots and Queer Health in Sarah Orne Jewett and Annie Adams Fields

Don James McLaughlin is an assistant professor at the University of Tulsa. His research focuses on late 18th and 19th century literary movements in the Americas, histories of medicine and psychiatry, disability studies, queer historiography; and the history of emotions. Research for his dissertation and and first book manuscript, Phobia: The Therapeutic Imagination in American Liberalism, has been supported by the Penn Humanities Forum, American Antiquarian Society, a Marguerite Bartlett Hamer Dissertation Fellowship at the McNeil Center for Early American Studies, and a Quarry Farm Fellowship from the Center for Mark Twain Studies. He has published on the history of medicine, genealogies of black queer theory, progressive print cultures, and disability history in American Literature, Literature and Medicine, J19: The Journal of Nineteenth-Century Americanists, the New Republic, Common-place: The Journal of Early American Life, Public Books, and Legacies, the magazine of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. His edition of Sarah Orne Jewett’s novel A Marsh Island is forthcoming in the Q19 series from the University of Pennsylvania Press.

In his lecture, McLaughlin will theorize the concept of “queer health” and its relationship to writing as a therapeutic activity, exploring this theme through the unlikely medium of blotting paper, a lowly and yet indispensable material for those who wrote with pen and ink in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. McLaughlin will use as an example a piece of blotting paper preserved at the Massachusetts Historical Society in the papers of Annie Adams Fields, who lived for many years in partnership with fiction writer Sarah Orne Jewett. Fields used this blotting paper in producing diary entries expressing her grief at Jewett’s death, and McLaughlin links Fields’s use of this object to Jewett’s references to blotting paper as an allegory for bereavement in fiction she wrote decades earlier. Theorizing Fields’s use of blotting paper as “affective refuse,” he locates a tension between excess and containment and between what is ephemeral and what is permanent as an essential feature of queer approaches to the meaning of health.

WLI Fall Writing Marathon

The Writing Lincoln Initiative is proud to invite you to the WLI Fall Writing Marathon! Following in the tradition of our NeWP collaborators, this writing marathon invites guests to spend a day exploring nature while writing about their experiences or anything that is important to them. Bring a notebook, a pen or pencil, and join us for a day of nature and writing. There is no need to be an expert to participate in this event, and as such, we highly encourage you to attend and to invite others — students, colleagues, friends, family members, etc.

The WLI Fall Writing Marathon will take place on Saturday, November 12th, from 12 - 4pm at Pioneers Park in Lincoln, NE. We ask that all attendees first meet at the Pioneers Park Nature Center (3201 South Coddington, Lincoln, NE 68522) at noon to begin the marathon. After a brief overview of what writing marathons entail, attendees will break into small groups that together, will explore the park, pause to write, and share that writing with each other. One of those groups will function as an accessibility group, which will stick to sidewalks, flat planes, and the sections of the park more suited for those with mobility issues.

We hope this event encourages individuals a chance to experience the world as writers, space to generate new material, and an opportunity to share their writing with others within a supportive community. E.N. Thompson Forum: The Craziest Thing We Can Do is Nothing

Tyler Riewer is the Creative Director at charity: water, a $100M nonprofit organization rooted in innovation and transparency. Charity: water uses data and storytelling to connect donors to their impact and dream up new ways to think about sustainability in the water sector. As of today, charity: water has funded 91,414 projects to bring clean and safe water to 14,762,215 people around the world. Tyler leads a brilliant team of designers and storytellers who are working hard to reinvent charity. He also has the incredible privilege of traveling the globe capturing stories about their local partners and the people they serve.

Tyler studied Advertising and Journalism at the University of Nebraska and then kicked off his career at youth marketing agency Archrival, writing copy for brands like Red Bull, Hormel, and Pabst Brewing Company. Years later, he made a Lewis-and-Clark-esque journey out to the Pacific Northwest and found a new home at Grady Britton, creating content for local favorites like Bob’s Red Mill, Dave’s Killer Bread, Travel Portland, and Nike. In 2013, Tyler made an even bigger jump from for-profit to nonprofit and joined the charity: water team in New York City. Today, he lives (and works remotely) from the Washington, D.C. area.

No Limits 2023 | Call for Papers!

The Women’s, Gender and Ethnic Studies Program at the University of Nebraska, Kearney is delighted to announce the Call for Papers for this year's No Limits Student Research Conference -- "Reflecting on the Past, Envisioning the Future” featuring Dr. Lorna Bracewell as the keynote speaker. The No Limits Conference invites submissions from undergraduates, graduate students, and recent alums.

The deadline for papers/proposals will be Friday, January 27, 2023. Proposals can be submitted online HERE. Please note: In order for potential presenters to save their progress and/or update submissions/proposals, as well as access a digital version of the future conference schedule, UNK will be using bepress Openspaces platform. This does require all potential presenters to create an account.

The No Limits conference will be held Friday, March 3, 2023 at the University of Nebraska - Kearney. It will take place in person at the Nebraska Student Union, 2nd Floor, Ponderosa Room. Conference attendance registration will open shortly—please stay tuned for registration updates! The event is free and open to the public.

What is the No Limits Conference? Who Can Participate?

No Limits is an interdisciplinary student conference on issues related to women, gender, and sexuality and is sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Programs at UNO, UNK and UNL. It is held annually in early March, and it rotates between the 3 campuses at Lincoln, Kearney, and Omaha.

The conference began in 1993 with a group of dedicated students who wanted to create an unquestionably interdisciplinary conference able to accommodate both traditional and non-traditional topics and presentations. Since that time the conference has remained student-oriented, open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates.

We invite proposals from undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates on any topic from any discipline related to women's issues, lives, histories, or culture, or women's and gender studies. Creative writing, visual arts, film, music, performances, workshops, and academic papers are all welcome. Proposals for individual presentations or poster presentations are accepted.

No Limits is a student research conference. So please announce to students and share widely with others. There is no registration cost, and the event is free and open to the public.
