Free screening of THE GREEN KNIGHT

Join the Medieval and Renaissance Studies program for a free screening of the 2021 film, The Green Knight and optional talkback to follow the film (with Prof. Stage of MRST and the English department).

An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.

We invite you to talk about your own thoughts after watching in the discussion period as we think through the critical moves the film makes and its overall aesthetics, adaptation approach, and composition.

Joy Castro book launch, FLIGHT RISK

Joy Castro, Willa Cather Professor of English and Ethnic Studies at UNL, reads from FLIGHT RISK, a “deftly intelligent literary thriller—beautifully written yet a real page-turner” (S. J. Watson). Castro is the award-winning author of the post-Katrina New Orleans literary thrillers Hell or High Water, which received the Nebraska Book Award, and Nearer Home; the story collection How Winter Began; the memoir The Truth Book; and the essay collection Island of Bones, which received the International Latino Book Award.

Cartoons & the Queer Aesthetic: A discussion of LGBTQ+ graphic novels/memoirs and the history of queer comics

In this discussion and visual presentation, UNL English professors James Brunton and Timothy Schaffert trace the evolution of queer content in comics, and the role of comics in queer activism and visibility. In addition, Brunton will discuss his graphic/novel-in-progress From the Neck Up, and Schaffert will discuss his research on pioneering gay cartoonists Matt Baker and Steve Abbott.

Nebraska Rep: ShakesFear

The Nebraska Repertory Theatre presents ShakesFear, an immersive theatrical experience.

“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.”

Enter the demented mind of William Shakespeare. Go on harrowing journey to recover one of Shakespeare’s lost plays. To escape a spell cast by the Weird Sisters, you’ll have to confront a murderous king, meddling fairies, ghastly ghosts and a bloody butcher with an appetite for blood!

This immersive theatrical experience is not recommended for children under 13 or the faint of heart.

Performances are in the Studio Theatre, 1st floor of the Temple Building.

Open REACH Training

Big Red Resilience & Well-Being offers REACH© trainings for university- and student-affiliated organizations, departments, colleges and programs. The training is designed to last 90 minutes and cannot be shortened. Participants will learn key signs to watch for and how to help a friend or loved one seek the help they need. Those who finish the 90-minute training will receive a certificate and lapel pin verifying their completion of the program.

Nebraska Community of Learners – Understanding Diversity through Education (#NCLUDE)

#NCLUDE is an opportunity for participants to contribute to ongoing resources related to inclusive excellence and to connect the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to the expanded community. Each session will present opportunities for individuals to be guest presenters, topic facilitators and provide workshops to promote dialogue that highlights the importance and the power of inclusion.

The Nebraska Community of Learners — Understanding Diversity through Education, will host its first meeting for the academic year on October 27th. For this session, a panel of members from the Non-binary gender values steering committee will discuss Executive Memorandum No. 40, the university of Nebraska system’s new policy on chosen names and gender identity.

The State of Diversity 2021 will feature several diversity leaders across the nation in a panel conversation designed to educate and inform campus on pressing diversity issues and perspectives on building equity across institutions of higher learning.

This year’s event will be hosted in a hybrid format, allowing participation across channels.
